The first exclusively online meeting in a very long time
We held our first exclusively online meeting because we were unable to secure a venue suitable for our meeting. We appreciate that we now have the option of holding our meetings online, which was unthinkable only three and a half years ago.
In the Prepared Speech session, Mayumi, Yukari, and Hiroshi took the stage. Mayumi discussed how important it is to find the perfectly right place for us in life comparing life to one of her passions, Ikebana. Yukari spoke about "Chatter," or what you tell yourself in your mind all the time. She shared what she learned from a book saying when faced with a tough situation it helps to write in your journal describing yourself using the third-person pronoun. Hiroshi talked about the impact of showing our smiles to each other using examples from his life.
One collective challenge that surfaced during the meeting is the way we show ourselves in an online meeting. Though it is highly recommended to distance yourself from the camera so that a large part of your upper body can be seen, some members were too close to the camera and had their faces occupying a significant area in their pane. Some even had a blank space above their heads. Some other members had another issue of placing their cameras too low. When the camera is too low you cannot secure a decent angle and you look arrogant looking down on your audience through the camera. This is not an image you want to present for yourself. In this era of online meetings everywhere, we might want to pay a bit more attention to how you look on the audience members' screens.
If you are interested in working on both your in-person presentation skills and online presentation skills, come visit us where some of the members can share their expertise.
