On April 29, 2023, one of our members, KJ, competed in the Division F Japanese Speech Contest. (Though we normally work in English, the contests are open to any eligible paid members in an English club.)
Despite his super-busy schedule and what he referred to as "lack of motivation," he delivered his speech about being lucky or unlucky, or rather thinking you're lucky or unlucky in the best way possible. He looked happy while delivering the speech, even when he was talking about some of his "unlucky" experiences. He later said he tried to enjoy speaking
It was a pity that he did not place. Yet, we enjoyed his speech and the subsequent exchange of opinions about the speech. Hopefully, he, or any other member, will compete in future contests and appreciate the precious lessons only the contest environment can offer.
For your information, Toastmasters holds five different kinds of speech contests; International, Humorous, Evaluation, Table Topics (impromptu speech), and Tall Tale. Among them, the International Speech Contest is a mandatory for all districts to hold annually. District 76, which Nishinomiya TGIF belongs to, hold one of the other four one at a time every year rotating in the above mentioned order. Also, District 76 holds the Japanese speech contests for those contest types. Contests start from the club level, moving up through the Area, Division, and District levels. The International Speech Contest alone has further rounds of the Regioin Quarter-final, Semi-Final and the final round of World Championship of Public Speaking.
If you are interested in Toastmasters speech contests, the District level contests will be held in mid- to late-May; For further information, visit the designated website here.
